, on 12 October, Saturday morning police received a welfare call from the neighbourhood of Hillside Morning side, noting that the front door to someone’s home was open.
James Smith, the neighbor who made the call, told WFAA that he called a non-emergency police number to ask for a welfare check. He was concerned because the lights were on and the front door was open.

As shown on the bodycam footage, the officer arrived after 2 in the morning and stood outside the open front door.
The lights in the house were on inside when the officer arrived. The video does not show the officer announcing himself at the doorway or knocking.
Fort Worth Police later acknowledged in a press conference that the officer did not announce he was with the police and they are investigating why.
The officer then walked to the side of the house, opened the gate, and walked into the backyard, shining light all around.
He saw someone through a house window inside the home, and yelled, Put your hands up. Show me your hands! The officer then shot through the window. Officials said he perceived a threat.
According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s office, Jefferson was in her bedroom when she was shot.

According to Jefferson’s family, prior to police arriving at her home, she was playing video games in her home with her nephew.
